Red horse genus (Moxostoma) is represented in North America by almost 20 different species. Some of the species have red fins while others have orange colored fins. The jumprock species in this genus may have gray fins. These fish are difficult to identify.

Currently, some taxonomists believe that the fish should be divided into two groups (sharks and regular fishes) and that there are some other primitive groups in the phylum such as hagfish or lampreys.
