SPECIES INFO
Blue-green algae is an unusual type of bacteria that can form colonies that are visible to the naked eye. These are usually found in calm shallow water. The usually small size of the clumps and the unusual color will help identify this to the phylum level.Blue-Green Algae (Cyanophyta) (Cyanobacteria) are now considered as part of the Bacteria group. They are found in diverse habitats usually associated with water. Although all of these are microscopic, sometimes they form visible colonies. In fresh water, they sometimes form balls of blue-green substance. These balls can be tiny or as large as a golf ball. There are probably less than 3,000 species in this Blue-Green Algae group.
Monera phylum includes the various bacteria. These are somewhat cellular organisms, but they lack a cell nucleus. Many of these organisms cause serious illness in humans. The diseases include Botulishm, Cholera, Diptheria, Gonorrhea, Lyme Disease, Plagues, Salmonellosis, Syphilis, Tetanus, Typhoid, and TB.
