Barbeled houndshark (Leptocharias smithii) is found along the coast of western Africa as far south as Angola. This also has been taken in the Mediterranean. This is usually found near the bottom on the continental shelf. This shark can reach about 32 inches in length. There are two widely separated dorsal fins each with a trailing spine. The color is pale grey-brown.

Many species of sharks face an uncertain future, as the Chinese purchase shark fins to make shark fin soup. It was estimated that 100 milllion sharks are killed each year for this purpose. However, recent estimates indicate the Chinese are reducing their consumption of this exotic soup.
