The tench (Tina tinca) is found in Europe and Asia, but this species has been introduced widely to other places. It is now sparingly established in California, Oregon(?), Washington, and Briitish Columbia. It may also be established in a few states in eastern North America. The tench usually weighs from 6 to 8 pounds, but records exist for twice that weight. It normally is from 10 to 12 inches in length. This is generally a bulky fish. The British view this as a good sporting fish in spite of its slimy nature.

Backboned Animals (Phylum Chordata) are the most advanced group of animals on earth. These animals are characterized by having a spinal cord or backbone. Most members have a clearly defined brain that controls the organism through a spinal cord. Fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals are in this phylum.

Currently, some taxonomists believe that the fish should be divided into two groups (sharks and regular fishes) and that there are some other primitive groups in the phylum such as hagfish or lampreys.
