Barred live bearer (Poeciliopsis turrubarensis) is found in the lowlands near the Pacific Ocean from Jalisco, Mexico south to Colombia. The maximum known stanard length is 7.4 cm. This would make most examples about 3 inches in length.Poeciliopsis genus is found from Central American and further south. Robert Rush Miller in his book on freshwater Mexican fish discusses about 18 different species. Most species remind one of small pale colored guppies.
The Poeciliidae (equal Poecilidae) are a group of live bearing fish native to both North and South America. This family includes many tropical species favored by the pet store industry. There are probably about 18O species in the family. The mosquitofish (Gsambusia affinis) has been introduced widely around the world and is probably the most widely distributed fresh water fish.
